Andra Stefan: I am a medical student at the University of Aberdeen, having previously graduated with a degree in Natural Sciences from University College London. Although I have only recently discovered my passion for writing, over the years I have had the opportunity to carry out scientific research in different fields from computational chemistry to molecular pharmacology. I have joined Universal Medicine as a writer to further explore research, particularly in the medical field, and to make it more accessible to the public!


Karina Dembla: I’m a biomedical science graduate from the University of Birmingham and a writer for the blog. I joined Universal Medicine to demystify any misconceptions our readers have of medicine/research, to explore the exciting new developments, and to ensure readers of other disciplines are informed about these scientific advancements. Shilpi Awasthi: I am from the captivating country of Botswana, found in Sub-Saharan Africa. and am a medical student at the University of Birmingham. I enjoy learning more about medicine and how it can improve people's lives - from day to day positive changes to incorporate to future developments in medicine. I am particularly keen on promoting Global Health and I feel that this blog is an opportunity for me to learn and voice more about pressing issues within the field.



Gemisha Cheemungtoo: I am a medical student at Newcastle University, who loves to eat, dance, and write. Having experience at my university paper, this blog is the perfect opportunity to share interesting medical and scientific developments in this refreshing format. I look forward to growing as a writer and learning about more medicine alongside readers!

Manav Babbar: I am a medical student studying at Barts and The London. I am interested in boxing, minimalism, and self-development. Disparities in Global Eye Care

Vision is one of our most precious possessions. Multiple polls globally show that most people are more fearful of becoming blind than losing any other sense. (1,2) With sight being such a valuable asset, one would assume that eyecare is at the forefront of medical services across the world. Living in the developed world, we perhaps take for granted the simple and yet crucial services available to us such as regular eye tests, glasses, contact lenses and high-quality ophthalmic care - most of which can be accessed for free or at a subsidised price. However, in many parts of the world this is not the case. 285 million people worldwide are visually impaired, with 90% being from developing countries. Do Contact Lenses Really “Support Your Vision”?

Contact lenses have been frequently used as an alternative to glasses. Compared to the heavy-framed glasses in front of one’s eyes (optic glasses), thin plastic discs on the eye (contact lenses) help correct refractive errors in both myopic and hypermetropic users. The lens’ shape and power can be tailored to the user’s sight. A concave lens can be used to decrease myopia by reducing light refraction and increasing focal length so that the image is formed on the retina (1)  (Figure 1). Alternatively, a convex lens can be used to limit hypermetropia in an opposing mechanism to concave lenses (1) (Figure 1).
